One thing every teacher does is to present new information. Even if you pride yourself on being a learner-centered and constructivist educator, some of your time will be spent in organizing and presenting what is to be learned. If your classroom is equipped with a display of some kind (from an expensive data projector down to a TV screen hooked to the computer), you can use programs like PowerPoint™ and /or Hyperstudio™ to do those presentations in a more interesting way. Once you feel comfortable doing it yourself, you'll be able to teach your students how to do the same.

When you've completed this module, you'll be able to:

create effective instructional presentations using presentation software;

present information effectively while being aided by a projected presentation.

First, participate in an introductory presentation about, amazingly enough, presentations. Work along with me as I demonstrates the following actions in PowerPoint:

  • creating a new slide
  • adding words to the title
  • bulleted lists
  • i inserting clip art from the PowerPoint library
  • rrearranging slides
  • alternating between the outline and slide view
  • adding notes for the instructor
  • applying a new design to the slides
  • adding transitional effects
  • inserting a hotlink to a web site
  • testing the presentation in slide show mode

Here is a link to several online practice modules: Inpiration, WebQuests, Dreamweaver, Hyperstudio & PowerPoint. I've also included an excellent tutorial on using buttons in PowerPoint and an article by Jamie McKenzie on the pitfalls of using Powerpoint.
