The World Wide Web has only been around in its present graphical form since 1994, yet it has already had a huge impact on business, entertainment, and (most importantly) education. Many Canadian schools have some presence on the Web, and teachers whose skills are up to date are putting up class pages as a way to guide their students and communicate with parents. This module will get you started as a creator of pages the world can read. When you've completed this module, you'll be able to:

  • Create a simple web page with varied test styles, bulleted lists and hot links to other sites;
  • Set up an account on a distant web server to prepare for publishing your page worldwide

As of Winter 2010 we will be using the Weebly or Yola reate our web pages. Mac users with Mobile Me accounts can use iWeb 08 or iWeb 09. More details in class about this.

Use the following tutorials to review what we've done in class: Weebly ~~ Yola

The information below is for former students who may need the links (do not use):

We'll be using SeaMonkey (Mozilla) as the html editor in this class. There are better editors around, but this one is free and is available for both Mac and Windows computers.

We will be using a tutorial prepared for Lindsay Place High School by Alison Hayden. Thanks Alison. We need the following pages: planning page, ingredients page, and finished page.

I will walk you through a simple intro exercise on web page basics and I will demonstrate the following:

  • Using the Help System
  • Basic Web Editing Tips
  • Changing Text and Background Colors
  • Formatting Paragraphs and Lists
  • Linking to Other URLs
  • Linking to an Email Address
  • Naming your files for the Web

Please pick the proper version to download:

After the demo, we'll grab a copy of a home page template. As practice and review of what we've just learned you will complete it and save it under the name homepage.htm

Your home page is now sitting on the hard drive of the computer in front of you. No one who doesn't sit there will ever see it. Since this is the World Wide Web we're dealing with rather than the Desk Wide Web, we'll need to put your file where the World can get to it.

Where do we put it? We will put it on the McGill Education Server using FTP
